In early 2020, ERI researchers began to explore how to implement negative emissions strategies (removal of carbon dioxide from the environment) throughout Virginia, to understand the interplay between negative emissions, communities, and existing economic and social activities—and analyze potential barriers and ancillary benefits of carbon mitigation. This event provides a summary of findings from the investigation, reflections on implications, and an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of the presenters.
Future research will explore how to accelerate the deployment of negative emissions strategies, how to create incentives for their adoption, and how to assess the costs of doing nothing. The goal of the Climate Restoration Initiative is to produce recommendations on pathways to negative emissions in Virginia and create mapping tools to inform state and community decision-making. This work will position Virginia as a model state in developing integrated negative emissions strategies that can be translated throughout the nation.
