A 2D hydrodynamic model was previously developed for a large portion of the Hampton Roads district of Hampton Roads. The model was calibrated with funding from the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC) for VDOT to predict flooding impacts to nearly 500 bridges and culverts within the study region. Large storm events are required to further calibrate and evaluate the model.

The results of this analysis will be new data and model runs that can be used to further evaluate the flood modeling system for decision support. Our goal will be to use this data and example application to obtain additional funding from VTRC, VDOT’s research arm, to further develop the model and system as a tool for the agency to improve transportation resilience to flooding events.
